Arsenal news: Mikel Arteta targeting the next Martin Ødegaard as Gunners work to sign Sverre Nypan

Arsenal are on the brink of a top eight Champions League finish after beating Dinamo Zagreb 3-0 in midweek.

The Gunners will miss the play-off round of the competition if they are to place in the top eight, meaning Mikel Arteta’s men would get a well-needed rest in February.

However, the North London club have not been at their best as of late, with frustrations growing among supporters.

Injuries have not been kind to Arsenal, with Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Jesus, Takehiro Tomiyasu and Benjamin White all currently sidelined.

Arteta has said that the club “are actively looking” for reinforcements this January, as the Gunners work on multiple deals.

The next Martin Ødegaard

According to David Ornstein, the North Londoners are working on a deal to sign youngster Sverre Nypan from Norwegian side Rosenborg.

The 18-year-old made his debut for Norway’s U21 side in September 2024 and is seen as one of the hottest prospects in Europe.

The Norwegian primarily plays in central midfield for Rosenborg, drawing comparisons with Arsenal captain Martin Ødegaard.

However, Nypan is also able to play in a more advanced midfield role or as a centre forward as well.

There is no doubt that Ødegaard could play a huge role in bringing his fellow countryman to the Emirates Stadium, and it would be a significant coup for the Gunners if they can land the youngster.

Time to get up to speed

The Eliteserien, Norway’s top flight, works differently to the Premier League, starting in March and ending in December.

Nypan has not played competitive football for almost seven weeks, so would take some time to reach full fitness if he was to move to England.

The Norwegian scored eight goals and contributed a further seven assists last season - mightly impressive stats considering the midfielder’s age.

EA FC career mode players will know just how much potential Nypan has, and soon the youngster could be gracing the Premier League stage in real life.

Ornstein has reported that talks with Rosenborg and the player’s camp are advancing, so the Arsenal faithful could soon see their first signing of the January transfer window.
