Crystal Palace news: Oliver Glasner eyeing EFL Championship duo as Marc Guehi departure likely
Crystal Palace are gearing up for their FA Cup fourth-round tie against Doncaster Rovers later on today.
Despite a shaky start to the season, the Eagles have had a strong campaign so far, with the South London club perched 12th in the Premier League table.
With the likes of Eberechi Eze, Jean-Philippe Mateta and Marc Guéhi within their ranks, Palace’s success is no surprise.
However, club captain Guéhi could be set to depart Selhurst Park next summer, with the club resigned to selling the centre-back.
Ready for a big move?
Since swapping West London for South London three-and-a-half-years ago, Guéhi has established himself as one of the best defenders in the country.
The ex-Chelsea man was a mainstay in the England back line last summer, as the Three Lions reached the EURO 2024 final where they narrowly lost out to Spain.
Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United, and Guéhi’s former club Chelsea have all been linked with a move for the defender in the last 12 months.
According to Alan Nixon via Patreon, Crystal Palace are expecting to sell their star defender in the summer, as the club could otherwise risk losing one of their prized assets for nothing.
The 24-year-old’s contract with the Eagles runs out in June 2026.
EFL Championship replacements
Oliver Glasner is already preparing for life without Guéhi and has identified two Championship defenders as a potential long-term replacement for the England international.
As reported by Nixon, Palace have been monitoring Burnley’s Maxime Estève and Middlesbrough’s Rav van den Berg, with both central defenders falling within the club’s price range.
Frenchman, Estéve struggled to make an impact for the Clarets last season as the Lancashire club were relegated from the Premier League, however, has been a mainstay in Burnley’s brilliant defence this year.
Scott Parker’s side have only conceded nine goals in the Championship this campaign.
On the other hand, Boro defender van den Berg has been an important cog in Michael Carrick’s defence, making 56 appearances for the club.
The 20-year-old has gained plenty of experience whilst at Middlesbrough, but it is clear to see that the Dutch U21 international is destined for bigger things.
Both young defenders would need some time to live up to the standard Guéhi has set at Selhurst Park, but undoubtedly have the potential to be even better than the current Palace centre-half.
